Chesleigh Homestead - Sofala, NSW, Australia

Gold & Diggings

Not only is Sofala the oldest existing gold settlement in Australia, but Chesleigh also boasts the very first gold strike of the region ~ The famous Bell’s hundredweight nugget (resulting in bloody murder) ~ O’Reilly’s extensive mines between Middle and Dam creeks ~ and the Jews Creek and Chinamans Creek alluvial diggings.

The remnants and relics of these historic activities are fascinating. Chinese built water races marching-stone walled - into the valley, almost reaching Kings Canyon.
The Cobb & Co coach trail - linking Sofala to Hill End - has 8 KMS of fantastic journey through Chesleigh, the haunt of many a bush ranger.

Old Miners huts, Chinese burial sites, myriad alluvial pothole diggings and the honeycomb drives of the amazing O’Reillys mine. All of these, for history buffs, gold seekers or just holiday adventurers, Chesleigh’s gold story is endless.
